Compressed Argon Gas

AOC Mexico S.A. de C.V. manufactures and provides PurityPlus® Argon for commercial use in Mexico.

A handful of properties ensured that Argon would become an ideal candidate for technical uses, such as providing a heavier atmosphere in which to segregate neutrons in nuclear research, as the nineteenth century was coming to a close:

  • its inertness and molecular weight,
  • its perceived abundance when compared to other rare gases, and
  • its commercial practicability.

Unquestionably, the widest early use for dry, high-purity Argon was gassing the globes in incandescent light bulbs during the first years of the twentieth century. Later, with the invention and commercial emergence of gas metal arc (GMAW or MIG) and tungsten inert gas (TIG), welding in the 1940s had to have a dense inert gas, primarily Argon-based. Even taking into account that none of these are true specialty-gas purity applications, the desire for them shows no sign of disappearing and they still compose a major portion of Argon’s sales volume.

These days, the most common specialty gas applications for high-purity Argon include its use as a carrier or background gas in diverse analytical instrument applications, for example: in the ferreting out and analysis of trace and ultra-trace elements utilizing Inductive Coupled Plasma Techniques, in Graphite Furnace Atomic Absorption, and in Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy. Argon additionally finds application in many types of Gas Chromatography, notably those utilizing a high-efficiency Electron Capture Detector (ECD) or an Ultrasonic Detector (USD). It’s also used as a carrier gas for analyzing hydrogen in helium with a TCD (Thermal Conductivity Detector) or USD. Over the years, Argon has seen heavier use by the semi-conductor industry as a carrier/purge gas.
